English SummaryThis issue of our newsletter has been produced in a period of serious political events. We have seen India and Pakistan on the brink of nuclear war. Fortunately, the two parts in the conflict have taken a step back during the last weeks. Indian writer Arundhati Roy recently wrote a very personal article, "Under the nuclear shadow"; a short excerpt can be read on the front page. You will find the whole article on the web: <http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4426130,00.html> The first Prep.Com. for the 2005 NPT Rev.conf. held its session at UN Headquarters in April. NGOs continue to play an active role. Three of our SLMK members were there. Read their reports about the impressive NGO activities in the midst of discussions about international treaties, diplomatic activities and sessions on weapons technology. IPPNW:s 15th world congress "Summit for Survival" was held on May 3-5 in Washington DC. Two students give us a personal and somewhat critical report about the congress. And our man in the US, Claes Andreasson, recapitulates the new US "Nuclear Posture Review". Rather frightening to read: the superpower's right to defend itself and its interests, even pre-emptively, is arrogantly taken for granted, be it at the cost of violating international treaties.
