The International Court of Justiceon July 8 delivered its Advisory Opinion on the issue of the legality of nuclear weapons. The final paragraph of the Court's preliminary press release states the main points of the Court's opinion. The entire text of the Court's opinion is published on the Web by the NGO Committee on Disarmament Medical Action for Global Security (MEDACT), the British IPPNW affiliate, comments on the Court's decision in a press release on June 9.
The Canberra Commissionwas announced on October 24, 1995. Its mandate is to propose practical steps toward a Nuclear Weapons Free World while maintaining stability and security. The final report of the Commission was presented to the Prime Minister of Australia on August 14. April, 1998 The 1998 Moscow Dialogue Seminarwas organized jointly by the Swedish and Russian IPPNW affiliate organizations on April 13 - 17. During these days the IPPNW delegation met with highly ranked representatives at ministries and at the State Duma. The Moscow experiences and programme will be followed up in 1999 within the proposed "Dialogue Seminars Project". Read the full report by Hans Levander.

India and Pakistan conduct nuclear testsIndia conducted three underground nuclear explosions om May 11, its first nuclear tests since 1974, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced. Two additional explosions were conducted the following day. On May 28, Pakistan conducted five nuclear test explosions, followed by one on May 30. Dialogue Seminar in India, February 1999.In February, 1999, an international delegation of doctors from IPPNW met with Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee and Defense Minister George Fernandes to call for measure toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. The delegation, led by Co-President Dr. Mary-Wynne Ashford of Canada, called for India to take leadership in the elimination of nuclear weapons by calling a world conference to bring together nation states and opinion leaders from civil society to develop a convention to eliminate all nuclear weapons in a time bound framework.
